Mission
To improve the quality of life for all people in the Detroit community, with particular emphasis on the African American
community, through programs that: advocate for positive change, educate to up lift, empower to improve economic
conditions and use methods for self-determination.
History
Operation Get Down, Inc. (OGD is a nonprofit, community-based agency that has served metro Detroiters since 1971.
Centrally located at the corner of Harper and Gratiot, OGD has been a mainstay of the eastside community for over 30
years. Born of the community organization movement in the 1970's, OGD is a true grassroots success story.

While many grassroots organization of the 70's have come and gone, Operation Get Down, Inc. has grown to a million
dollar CARF accredited, United Way member agency, that serves over 35,000 people each year. OGD is proud  of our
grassroots heritage and equally proud of our proven ability to evolve and remain flexible in an increasingly  complex
funding and service delivery environment. Through ever changing times, the hallmark of OGD's continue success and
viability has been our strong track record for identifying and responding to current, emerging community needs.

  • In the 1970's, OGD raised money for sickle cell research and addressed the increasing community concern with
    youth gang violence.

  • In the 1980's, OGD, through our warehouse, became synonymous with food distribution to the community's most
    needy.

  • In the 1990's, OGD was at the forefront of recognizing and responding to the increasingly number of homeless
individuals and families, one of the community's most disenfranchised populations. The NIA (purpose) House, a
transitional housing center, was opened in the former YMCA building on Harper.

  • In 2004, Operation Get Down undertook the rigorous process to become accredited by The Commission on
Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). OGD successfully met the CARF standards for program
excellence. This accreditation is assurance to our clients and colleagues that Operation Get Down's services
conform to nationally and internationally recognized standards and re focused on delivering the most favorable
    outcomes for those we serve.

Today, OGD continues to focus on our community's most marginalized citizens, offering residential substance abuse
treatment in additional to our homeless programs.

Thank you for browsing Operation

excited about the implementation of
the this site and we hope it exceeds
the expectations of all. This is a very
exciting time for OGD as we continue
to expand, improve and grow both
organizationally and personally.

We have been serving the community
for over 30 years with the purpose of
enhancing the lives of others. We
have operated may successful
programs in the past including our
food co-op, Birth (program for
pregnant teens), a youth recreation, a
day care, project dignity (residential
training program), and seniors
citizen program.

Currently however, we  now focus
our programs on substance abuse
treatment and services for the
homeless. Our building is open to
the public for Narcotics Anonymous
(NA) and Alcohol Anonymous
programs.

A special "thanks" and salute goes
out to Deborah Powell for creating
